Prof Janet Bornman

Janet is an environmental photobiologist focussing on plant photobiology and the interplay of climate change, UV radiation, and stratospheric ozone dynamics in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Current research interests also include the wider aspects of environmental effects as Co-Chair of the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel of the United Nations Environment Programme.

She has appreciated the multi-disciplinary science of photobiology through the International Union of Photobiology (IUPB) and the European Society for Photobiology (ESP). Janet is the President of IUPB, and was previously President of ESP. She has also served as Editor-in-Chief of the ESP’s journal, Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences.

Janet is the recipient of several awards, including the ESP medal “for outstanding internationally acknowledged contribution in the field of photobiology and generous dedication to the ESP”, and the IUPB Edna Roe Lecturer award “for accomplishments in the photosciences;” as well as receiving the Finsen Medal at the IUPB 2019 congress.
